SLF021 :: SOFY MAJOR - Waste

October 30th 2015 · Solar Flare Records · 12" LP, CD, Digital

"From the post-industrial wilderness of Clermont-Ferrand, France’s violently addictive hardcore-soaked noise rock outfit, SOFY MAJOR, has completed their third LP “Waste”.

With just under forty-two minutes of new material, Waste undoubtedly sees SOFY MAJOR charting new boundaries, and at a more relaxed pace. While not shying away from their rampant outbursts completely, the raging appears more subdued, with slightly more melodious sensibilities enveloping its delivery.

The grimy Unsane/Harvey Milk/Hammerhead-influenced Big-Muff sonic core of the band’s delivery is here fused to a rocked-out underbelly analogous to the output of Coliseum, Rising, Floor, and the like. Calling once again upon their trusted engineer team, SOFY MAJOR enlisted Dave Curran (Unsane, Pigs, Big Business) to produce Waste, this time on home turf to avoid hurricanes, recording the album at Black Box Studio in France. The output was then mixed by Andrew Schneider (Pigs, Julie Christmas, Unsane) at Translator Audio in Brooklyn and mastered by Carl Saff at Saff Mastering."

SLF005 :: SOFY MAJOR - Permission To Engage

Novemer 11st 2010 · Solar Flare Records, Prototype Records, Basement Apes Ind., Bigout Records, Atropine Rec. · 12" LP, CD Digipack, Tape, Digital

"Permission to Engage, with no question mark. Because Sofy Major doesn’t ask for. With their debut album, Mathieu Moulin (bass-vocals), Seb Fournet (guitar) and Mathieu Desternes (drums) from Clermont-Fd (FRA) authorize themselves to fire at will. Result is they break many walls between extreme musical styles, to resume in fifty minutes what others have been trying for years.
But it was the least these three hard workers (and not rockers, unless maybe…) could do for their first full length : no way, after several releases going from hardcore to doom and intensive touring over France and Europe, that the band stops a perpetual evolution guided by a DIY work and life ethic. Far beyond anything they’ve done before, Permission to Engage takes Sofy Major to a new step in the band’s career. With this first collaboration with Andrew Schneider (Unsane, Made Out of Babies, Keelhaul, Converge), expect no-prisoners-shows and epic assaults on stage. And the charge is just getting started."

SLF010 :: SOFY MAJOR - Idolize

May 31st 2013 · Solar Flare Records · 12" LP, CD Digipack, Digital

"In the Autumn of 2012 SOFY MAJOR transports to the Northeastern North American quadrant, bent on hammering out their new opus at renowned Brooklyn-based studio Translator Audio with producer Andrew Schneider (Unsane, Keelhaul, Cave In, etc.) as well as to embark on their first US tour. As luck would have it, they arrived in town at the same time Hurricane Sandy moved in. The loss is 100% -- the entire studio flooded beyond repair, and all equipment in the studio including the band’s gear left swimming. The trio bummed around the borough for a few days, hooking up with cohort and labelmate Dave Curran (Unsane, Pigs), who helped set up the sessions they crossed the globe to carry out. The band eventually recorded with Schneider at Brooklyn-based Seaside Lounge and Spaceman Sound studios, and had it mastered by Carl Saff at Saff Mastering, the band then immediately taking to the road on a delayed but steadfast American tour."

November 27th 2011 · Solar Flare Records, Prototype Records, Basement Apes Ind., Ocinatas Ind., Bigout Records, Impure Muzik · 12" Split, Digital

"And here comes the long-waited split, the artistic collaboration transposing the obvious affiliation between those two bands, but above all, the friendship developed on the road around a sixpack. Sofy Major vs. Membrane ? Let’s say Sofy Major + Membrane. No need to choose sides, or to talk about a confrontation considering the sound impact. Two different AND complementary universes, the same roots but a different approach ; Membrane are the french noise-hardcore veterans. Normal to find a kind of heritage in Sofy Major when they manage to break free to explore other paths, following a daring mix of genres and always effective in the logic of their last album “Permission to Engage”.
In four titles, the trio from Clermont-Ferrand shows once again that the field is wide, mostly destroyed, the power remains the watchword. As a result, without respite, the old school of Vesoul sounds a second charge, in three attacks, with this unstoppable formula where to hit hard and get it right, honesty is the best weapon.
Sofy Major vs. Membrane ? If somebody got to be KO, that’s the listener at the end."

SLF003 :: SOFY MAJOR - Maxi

April 4th 2009 · Solar Flare Records, Emergence Records, Communication Is Not Words · 12" Maxi

"Noisy french goodness. Packaged in a screen-printed 12″ gatefold sleeve + screen-printed B side. Noisy French goodness ! The intensity hardly lets up for the entirety of the Maxi, from doom-fueled songs to ambient hits, the 4 tracks create a desolate piece that is both heavingly heavy and hopeless. Some tracks trudge through sludge's swampy waters, while others throw up heavy Rock pieces due to the eclectic breaking of rock rules and formulas. As intelligent as they are intense, Sofy Major have delivered a stun grenade of a debut."

SLF004 :: SOFY MAJOR - 5 Years of Freaks

April 7th 2010 · Solar Flare Records · CD Arigato Pak

"Hardcore noise that isn’t quite black metal, nor doom, but with song titles like “Satan” and “Black Scars,” rest assured there’s enough juju here to shake a stick at. Spliced sound bites and the occasional drone add versatility to this quartet out of France’s first full length. This is an impressive range for a band that’s gone through numerous members and put out such little work. Keep yer eye on ‘em. Recommended."

October 27th 2010 · Solar Flare Records · 10" Split

"The second proper release from Sofy Major. The bands kicks things off right away with three tracks of their "heavy"-esque attack of harsh riffing and frenzied screams accented by churning midpaced surges and subtle hints at melody tucked away amidst all the layering.There’s still a caustic and chaotic edge with lots of changes throughout, but there also seem to be more frequent areas of tangible force that give the listener something to latch onto, and I like that a lot. One Second Riot follows with three tracks of their own, a duo primarily utilizing drums, bass, and vocals - with electronics and samples creeping in on occasion to add additional accents. Songs are a touch slower and longer, but still possess noisy elements and a similar sort of energy. "

SLF001 :: SOFY MAJOR - untitled

March 3rd 2007 · Solar Flare Records · 12" EP

"Ragged screams, pummelled octaves, clattering drums and various other stock tricks are deployed, though the inclusion of some ambient passages and crackling samples-as-background-noise at least make for a more interesting racket than many of the other bands who've helped drive this style into the ground over the years. Solid for what it is !"
